Wacker Drive Reconstruction
Chicago, Illinois

JLA worked closely with large engineering firms, the City of Chicago, and state preservation officials to guide the preservation component of this complex reconstruction project. Rehabilitation of the 74-year-old roadway viaduct was necessary to bring it into compliance with modern codes. Preservation scope, established through close coordination with state preservation officials, included historic documentation, removal and re-mounting of original cladding onto the new roadway structure, and cleaning and repairs of cladding, stairways, light fixtures, and ironwork. Deteriorated elements, such as stone balustrades, were reconstructed based on their original forms.
