Great Lakes Building 1 Renovation

JLA served as preservation architect for this interior and exterior renovation and restoration project of this prominent building in the Great Lake Naval Station Historic District. The exterior renovation design maintains the aesthetic of the building, which is a critical feature of the historic district, while being sensitive to the Navy’s budget constraints. This was accomplished by using various methods of restoration including repair, replacement pointing and cleaning of existing brick and terra cotta. The finish of any new terra cotta installed was formulated to match the distinct original iron spotted glaze. The result was a watertight exterior envelope that did not differ in appearance from the original façade. JLA was successful in hiding mechanical equipment from view in existing unused space.
