JLA conducted the first comprehensive project to repair and restore the deteriorated envelope of this 1928 Tudor Revival-style school. Exterior walls were repointed while over 1,000 pieces of terra cotta were replaced with those matching the original in form and finish. Copper roofing was installed over bay projections to emulate the 1928 design, window glazing was replaced, and exterior doors were reconstructed based on historic design. JLA also assessed modern accessibility issues and designed solutions including an exterior ramp, new railings, and improved door hardware.

Carl Schurz High School

This preservation project focused on the repair and improvement of the roof sytem of this National Register Listed Prairie School masterpiece designed by Dwight Perkins. JLA survey and condition assessment led to repair and replacement of missing soffit panels, damaged fascia, clay tile and beam wraps throughout the building perimeter. Supplemental fasteners were designed for additional support of these elements. Historically-compatible snow guards were also added to eliminate snow slides onto entrances and sidewalks.

Lucy Flower High School

Over several years, the envelope of this architecturally significant 1927 school building had become greatly deteriorated and inappropriately modernized. JLA directed a comprehensive restoration and renovation of the building that included replacement of corroded lintels, repair and cleaning of terra cotta units, and design of replacement windows with true divided lites to return the building to its original appearance. In addition to the replacement of over 32,000 sq. ft. of roofing, parapet, skylight, penthouse, and hatch repairs were completed and the insulation system was modified to meet modern Chicago Energy Code requirements.

Frederick Chopin Elementary School

JLA has a comprehensive history of experience working for Chicago Public Schools System to administer condition assessment and restoration of their school buildings and related facilities. After a period of neglect and inappropriate renovations, this classically-inspired masonry building was in dire need of repair. JLA reviewed the condition of the exterior envelope, made recommendations, and guided the repair and restoration of all masonry walls, roofing, windows, entry doors, and fencing that encompasses the grounds.

Chicago Public Schools, ADA Compliance
Chicago, Illinois

In addition to addressing façade deterioration for several historic Chicago public schools, JLA designed and implemented historically sensitive solutions to meet modern ADA requirements and safety codes. These schools, all built between 1920 and 1970, included Rogers Elementary School, Beasley Academic Magnet Center, Kannon Magnet School, Pershing Magnet School for the Humanities, Owen Scholastic Academy, Lenart Regional Gifted Center, and Edison Regional Gifted Center. Upgrades comprised construction of ramps, installation of elevators, installation of new door hardware and opening devices, alteration of parking lots and sidewalks, modification of plumbing fixtures and communication systems, and design of appropriate signage.
